About Me

Julia Silk photoI work in association with MBA Literary Agents Ltd, a leading literary agency, and welcome submissions from new and established writers of fiction, with a focus on accessible literary fiction, commercial fiction, crime and thriller.

In non-fiction I am particularly interested in platform-driven books in the areas of parenting and lifestyle, fashion, style and beauty. And if you have a non-fiction story to tell that will make me hold my breath and keep me turning the pages then I’d love to see it. That said, if you have a great idea that’s just dying to get out but doesn’t fit into the above categories, please query me – I’m open to anything that feels fresh and exciting.

Before becoming an agent I worked as an editor for 15 years, most recently at Orion, where I worked on books by, among others, Maeve Binchy, Katherine Webb, Gillian Flynn, Rainbow Rowell, Ian Rankin and Michael Connelly.

In fiction I’m looking for fresh voices that grab me from the first page. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel, but I do want to feel captivated and intrigued from the outset. Whether it’s a crime series character with a twist (think Harry Bingham’s Fiona Griffiths), a beautifully written, smart and immersive anatomy of a life (like Curtis Sittenfeld’s American Wife), or a subtly chilling portrayal of an anti-heroine you can’t help but root for (Harriet Lane’s Alys, Always), for me it’s all about new ways of telling perennial stories, through characters that leap off the page.

You can find a Pinterest board of my favourite novels here, to give you a broader idea of what I love to read.
